PTA Committees:

Green Committee — There is a lot of potential for creativity and community on this committee. Past members of the green committee have researched and written grants in coordination with the science teachers and the Green Team, which is a group of students who choose to be on the team as their elective. Members have also discussed gardening projects for the plant beds in the front courtyard and the tree pits, and they have researched solutions for being able to use the outdoor rooftop space off the science labs. The green committee could potentially help with the Annual Mother’s Day plant sale, plan an Earth Day event, or just help maintain sustainable recycling and composting practices in the building.

Hospitality Committee — This new committee will have 2 jobs. First, members will manage concessions for school events, stand-alone bake sales, and the many open houses MS 839 holds for prospective students. Open Houses this year are in the afternoons on 10/24, 11/2, 11/8, 11/15, and 11/28. This will include planning, soliciting donations and volunteers through Signup Genius, and coordinating funds raised with the Treasurer. Second, hospitality committee members will be the face of MS 839 to the rest of our district. This may include representing MS 839 at info sessions held by schools with high representation, eg, PS 321, or reaching out to and visiting D15 schools that are underrepresented in our district to get the word out about our school and encourage applications.

High School Committee — This is a parent support committee for the high school admissions process. Committee members have managed the high school resources page on the MS 839 website, created a calendar of events to advertise school tours and auditions, worked with staff and arts teachers to help plan ahead with high school admissions requirements in mind, and helped organize parent informational meetings with the administration and guidance counselor. New members will take over website maintenance and continue to be active in helping parents and administration with this challenging process.

Auction Party Committee — This committee plans the annual spring parents’ auction party. Members will solicit and collect donations from families and businesses, plan the decorations and food, organize volunteers, and advertise for the event.

Library Committee — Please volunteer to assist our librarian, Jan. Her hours are every morning from 8:20-2:40. You can help with reshelving, checking out books when classes visit, planning library tours, or general organization and maintenance of the library. Committee members may also help with book fairs.
